The past few months have been a whirlwind of crocheting and sewing, taking pictures and videos, learning new software and building a new website... I've learned so much, and I'm so excited to be able to share it with you! Everything is still a work in progress (like most things in my life ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ), but I have gotten to a point where I'm ready to share the new site and Part 1 of my High Tea Crochet Quilt Tutorial. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jeacx0punwA/VuiJTc30x-I/AAAAAAAAqAQ/bWoquOd67iETr1ng3LQLdwCEapPfZEczQ/s1600/IMG_20160312_112652.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jeacx0punwA/VuiJTc30x-I/AAAAAAAAqAQ/bWoquOd67iETr1ng3LQLdwCEapPfZEczQ/s400/IMG_20160312_112652.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
Not too long ago, I was reading "Big Magic" by Elizabeth Gilbert and was struck by her writing on the nature of ideas. She believes that ideas are alive and they they can jump from soul to soul in order to find the most efficient route to earth. Since I haven't done much crafting since my son was born, and I haven't found much inspiration since my favorite fabrics stores closed last year, I've felt that many ideas have passed me by. But my luck changed when my friend, Jera Brandvig, announced her new fabric line. "<a href="http://quiltingintherain.com/my-fabric-2" target="_blank">High Tea</a>" is a gorgeous collection of prints inspired by vintage china tea sets and dainty, lace doilies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YC9rHj16JGs/VuiJRKpJYpI/AAAAAAAAqA4/UsPvRkd4XfseOurtaXTisYOTy-JhoBUAg/s1600/IMG_20160222_121811.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YC9rHj16JGs/VuiJRKpJYpI/AAAAAAAAqA4/UsPvRkd4XfseOurtaXTisYOTy-JhoBUAg/s320/IMG_20160222_121811.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
Just the images of this fabric inspired me to reach back into my earliest memories of crafting and drinking tea with my Grandma Ruby. I've written before about how Grandma Ruby gave me my first crash course in sewing, but she also taught me crochet and embroidery (and how to drink tea with tons of sugar--she was from the south). I remember making long crochet chains as a young girl sitting in her living room, and then making chains of my chains, until she showed me how to use a hook to make fabric of single and double crochets. Somewhere my mom has my first real crochet project: a wonky, green scarf that I made for her. These memories made me want to combine my love of crochet, with Jera's beautiful, vintage inspired fabrics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UoUu6irxPSg/VuiJxcvHoAI/AAAAAAAAqA0/hg2qRvDmFRoO1jCg8x5NL5iFiVB9HX84Q/s1600/IMG_20160227_104134.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UoUu6irxPSg/VuiJxcvHoAI/AAAAAAAAqA0/hg2qRvDmFRoO1jCg8x5NL5iFiVB9HX84Q/s320/IMG_20160227_104134.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Old crochet tablecloths and blankets are usually made of small "motifs" that are joined together. Crocheted granny squares are a basic example of this technique, but Jera's fabric demanded a more elegant touch. So I got out my collection of Grandma Ruby's vintage crochet magazines, looking for more inspiration. Eventually, I settled on trial and error and sketching out my own design.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XEcE6uU1yxM/VuiJReb4NUI/AAAAAAAAqA4/5yjtsZHThPAIlFYlsWJWHK6vXDq4ycE_Q/s1600/IMG_20160219_133009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="281" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XEcE6uU1yxM/VuiJReb4NUI/AAAAAAAAqA4/5yjtsZHThPAIlFYlsWJWHK6vXDq4ycE_Q/s320/IMG_20160219_133009.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm extremely happy with how this blanket turned out. I had only three weeks to finish it, so I didn't stop and take many picture along the way. I will work on getting a tutorial together soon though--just as soon as I catch up on sleep and chores. :-)<br />

<br />
A few weeks ago I finally finished the hand-sewn, hand-quilted hexagon blanket for my son that I started when I found I was pregnant. He's turning 1 in two weeks! It's amazing how times flies! Anyway, I had a bit of leftover fabric that I set aside to make a matching pillowcase. I wanted an envelope style enclosure with a fun contrast band with a narrow accent, but I couldn't find a pattern or tutorial for exactly what I had in mind. So I made my own. Here's what I did:<br />
<br />
<u>Materials</u><br />
<u><br /></u>
1/2 yard Main Fabric<br />
1/3 yard Contrast Band<br />
1/4 yard Accent <i>(optional)</i><br />
13" by 18" Toddler/Travel Pillow (I used <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KDKKD1I?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00" target="_blank">this one</a>)<br />
<br />
<u>Cutting</u><br />
<br />
Main fabric--<br />
Cut one piece 30" wide by 14" tall<br />
<br />
Contrast band--<br />
Cut one piece 11" wide by 14" tall<br />
Cut one piece 5" wide by 14" tall<br />
<br />
Accent--<br />
Cut two pieces 2" wide by 14" tall<br />
(Note: this makes a 1/2-inch wide accent strip, for a narrower strip cut the pieces 1.5" wide)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9mHhjjPyPCA/VeCNOkiu4dI/AAAAAAAAYmk/HEKJFdAkN_4/s1600/2015-08-27%2B19.55.45.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9mHhjjPyPCA/VeCNOkiu4dI/AAAAAAAAYmk/HEKJFdAkN_4/s400/2015-08-27%2B19.55.45.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G1_mVykSCZU/VeCNO5GWLkI/AAAAAAAAYmg/VNUUNN68L70/s1600/2015-08-27%2B19.56.50.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G1_mVykSCZU/VeCNO5GWLkI/AAAAAAAAYmg/VNUUNN68L70/s400/2015-08-27%2B19.56.50.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<u>Assembly</u><br />
<br />
Hem one of the 14" sides of each contrast band. Fold over 1-inch and press. Open up the and fold up to the crease, press again. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C-gBWkMHdaU/VeCNO5HdXVI/AAAAAAAAYmc/3ani9rOlCbw/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.01.35.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C-gBWkMHdaU/VeCNO5HdXVI/AAAAAAAAYmc/3ani9rOlCbw/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.01.35.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Refold along both creases. Edgestitch close to the fold. This makes a 1/2-inch narrow hem.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-23atzq5VxT0/VeCNPoMsd-I/AAAAAAAAYmw/xiZ4eBABB5g/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.03.07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-23atzq5VxT0/VeCNPoMsd-I/AAAAAAAAYmw/xiZ4eBABB5g/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.03.07.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold the accent piece in half length-wise and press. Open it up and with right sides together, align along the raw edge of the contrast band. Pin in place and sew along the crease. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-76Tx9MTp56Y/VeCNQNCLWII/AAAAAAAAYm4/ByE_XpTsDZU/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.06.26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-76Tx9MTp56Y/VeCNQNCLWII/AAAAAAAAYm4/ByE_XpTsDZU/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.06.26.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VMVg8yyabQo/VeCNQUbJKqI/AAAAAAAAYm8/T_PoqvVPZKM/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.06.55.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VMVg8yyabQo/VeCNQUbJKqI/AAAAAAAAYm8/T_PoqvVPZKM/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.06.55.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Trim the inside edge of the acccent to 1/2". (This will reduce bulk in the next seam.) Fold along crease again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qTeGNHI0xOI/VeCNQwi2l6I/AAAAAAAAYnA/LTA2fNR1XtA/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.09.00.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qTeGNHI0xOI/VeCNQwi2l6I/AAAAAAAAYnA/LTA2fNR1XtA/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.09.00.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
With sides together, pin the main fabric to contrast band. Sew a 1/2" seam.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mv7vBYk_6bw/VeCNRY6x6vI/AAAAAAAAYnI/SebKHmlh9wU/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.13.34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mv7vBYk_6bw/VeCNRY6x6vI/AAAAAAAAYnI/SebKHmlh9wU/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.13.34.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EjG8OPSUWzA/VeCNRfAzdTI/AAAAAAAAYnY/m9xFwFMpBIc/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.17.20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EjG8OPSUWzA/VeCNRfAzdTI/AAAAAAAAYnY/m9xFwFMpBIc/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.17.20.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Press the seam toward the main fabric. (It helps to press the seam open first and then to the side.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OTy7I2J9-V4/VeCNRgPpL7I/AAAAAAAAYnQ/utVgl6tU8ng/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.19.25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OTy7I2J9-V4/VeCNRgPpL7I/AAAAAAAAYnQ/utVgl6tU8ng/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.19.25.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SLBgh0olQtk/VeCNSKM7a7I/AAAAAAAAYnw/aScctVJtPmA/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.19.37.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SLBgh0olQtk/VeCNSKM7a7I/AAAAAAAAYnw/aScctVJtPmA/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.19.37.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Finish the raw edge with an overcast stitch. (A zigzag stitch or pinking shears would work, too. And if you have a serger--by all means use it.) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_nhd0NpekPw/VeCNS6T0CkI/AAAAAAAAYno/ml-nJ2XQggc/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.44.57.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_nhd0NpekPw/VeCNS6T0CkI/AAAAAAAAYno/ml-nJ2XQggc/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.44.57.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Repeat with the other side.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zr5Qe8H0laY/VeCNSvoP6vI/AAAAAAAAYn8/jf88kWhOGak/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.20.31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zr5Qe8H0laY/VeCNSvoP6vI/AAAAAAAAYn8/jf88kWhOGak/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.20.31.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
With right sides together, fold the pillowcase in half width-wise, so that the contrast and accent bands are aligned. Pin in place and baste with a long machine stitch about 1/4" inch from the edge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5tgLe4u8SHc/VeCNTU9u0KI/AAAAAAAAYn4/vtc9sbY-WBk/s1600/2015-08-27%2B20.46.51.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5tgLe4u8SHc/VeCNTU9u0KI/AAAAAAAAYn4/vtc9sbY-WBk/s400/2015-08-27%2B20.46.51.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold the extra contrast over so that it wraps around the opposite side. Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along each side. Finish the raw edges with an overcast stitch (or your method of choice.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9EsyfAWqMdc/VeCNUGnlmSI/AAAAAAAAYoQ/a5n0OIHVDqA/s1600/2015-08-28%2B08.26.43.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9EsyfAWqMdc/VeCNUGnlmSI/AAAAAAAAYoQ/a5n0OIHVDqA/s400/2015-08-28%2B08.26.43.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Turn right side out and you're done!<br />
<div>

<br />
<div>
Right now the baby is asleep, the house is clean, and I feel like I've been in possession of super powers for the past 2 days. This afternoon two dear friends from my Stitch & Sew days came over for a visit. One of them is due to have her second boy in about a month, so I racked my brain over the weekend for what gift I could get for him. I wandered around the mall on Sunday, but nothing looked special enough. I finally decided that I'd have to make something. I doubted I could get anything significant done by Tuesday afternoon. Still, I had to try.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Should I make a quilt or a blanket? A toy? Bibs? Burp cloths? ... I remembered I had a pattern for some adorable baby pants. I could make a whole set! So yesterday morning I dug out the pattern, copied it onto Swedish tracing pattern (the best stuff ever!) and after the Fredster's morning nap, we took a trip to the fabric store. I washed and dried the fabric and managed to get it almost completely cut out by the end of his last nap. After his bedtime, I went to work. He fell asleep at 7pm and I was done by 10:30. Hurray!!</div>

<br />
<div>
The pattern is from <a href="http://www.purlbee.com/2013/06/02/corinnes-thread-baby-pants/" target="_blank">Purl Soho</a>. It's so quick and easy! I used the overcast stitch on my machine to finish the seams, so they should hold up in the wash. The only difficult part was sewing the gusset, but with lots of pins, I didn't have any problems.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've had my hands full the past few weeks trying to keep up with my crazy kid. He's crawling all over the place and pulling up on everything. So while this quilt has been finished for a while now, I'm only just now able to catch my breath and post about it. Greg and Monica at <a href="http://www.westseattlefabriccompany.com/" target="_blank">West Seattle Fabrics</a> did the machine quilting for me. This is the first time I've ever had a quilt long-armed, and I'm very pleased with the result. And they finished it in less than a week!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tiMFBFzrVys/VWep6IarFJI/AAAAAAAACcs/UIPWno_vRsY/s1600/2015-05-11%2B09.59.02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tiMFBFzrVys/VWep6IarFJI/AAAAAAAACcs/UIPWno_vRsY/s400/2015-05-11%2B09.59.02.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>

<br />
I'm also still stitching away on the other hexagon quilt. The hand quilting is going much faster than I had anticipated. So I'm confident that I'll get it finished by my goal of Freddy's birthday in September.<br />

<br />
Yellow is a color that I don't see used very often in quilting. It's terribly bright and can easily become overwhelming. (At least to my unaccustomed Seattleite eyes.) As I've been working on Freddy's hexagon quilt, I've had a love/hate relation with the yellows I included. When the quilt is bunched up on my lap, I love the pops of color. But when I lay it out, I'm not so sure. Sometimes I can't focus on anything but the yellow. Then it starts growing on me again. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gxrwpruZzZw/VUoy-H1zLhI/AAAAAAAACPA/iSWpYndes34/s1600/2015-05-04%2B12.50.04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gxrwpruZzZw/VUoy-H1zLhI/AAAAAAAACPA/iSWpYndes34/s1600/2015-05-04%2B12.50.04.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Eventually I decided just to embrace the yellow. I found a yellow and white stripe for the backing, and again I went back and forth about using it or finding a more neutral color. Yesterday, I got the quilt pin-basted and right now I'm in love with the yellow. The colors of the quilt seem fitting for a spring day in Seattle<span style="background-color: white; color: #4e5665; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.466667175293px;">—</span>partly cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms and patches of sunlight.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've also wavered on how to quilt this thing. I though it might be fun to have it long-armed with maybe a custom design. In the end though, I decided that I wanted a more handmade feel, so I'm going to try and make it entirely by hand. For now, I've pin basted my 'quilt sandwich'. I'll probably end up having to thread baste it once I really get going. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Last night I attempted a few stitches, but with no thimble, it was both slow and painful. This quilt will probably get set on the back burner for a week or two while I finish up a couple other projects.<br />

<br />
This weekend I'm attending the baby shower of a friend from college. It's the first shower I've been invited to since becoming a mom, so I wanted to make something special and useful that wouldn't take too much time in the sewing room. (I'm also playing the piano for a school musical this week, so I've only had a few nap times to spare.) I decided to go with something that I use everyday, many time times a day: burp cloths. I had a fat quarter bundle of 'Storybook' lying around. The soft blues and browns would work for a boy or girl, which is perfect, because this baby's going to be a surprise.<br />
<br />
I lined the burp cloths with one-sided terry cloth. I've seen it called 'baby terry' or 'French terry'. It's thick enough to absorb various consistencies of baby fluids, but thin enough to tuck a whole burp cloth (or two) into your pocket. I made the burp cloths about 10-inches by 16-inches<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.466667175293px;">—</span>a much more practical size than the long skinny cloths I've seen in stores.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JDvaJI1gMhY/VTlzDATkBDI/AAAAAAAACJQ/OZdBEW80Bgo/s1600/2015-04-23%2B15.02.57.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JDvaJI1gMhY/VTlzDATkBDI/AAAAAAAACJQ/OZdBEW80Bgo/s1600/2015-04-23%2B15.02.57.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My son, Freddy, is a few months into eating solid foods, and we are going through a couple bibs every day. So I decided to also make a set of matching bibs, using one of Freddy's bibs to make a pattern. I traced his bib onto Swedish tracing paper <span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.466667175293px;">—</span>(which is seriously the best stuff for making or copying patterns, go buy a roll!)<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, 'lucida grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.466667175293px;">—</span>and I added about a 1/4-inch seam. In retrospect, a 1/2-inch seam would have been better. It was difficult to make sure that I had securely closed the hole for turning when I did the top-stitching.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-72EZ8jModO0/VTl0n78K9gI/AAAAAAAACJc/BQPvzeHGn3g/s1600/2015-04-20%2B09.20.02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-72EZ8jModO0/VTl0n78K9gI/AAAAAAAACJc/BQPvzeHGn3g/s1600/2015-04-20%2B09.20.02.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Instead of cutting the terry cloth out with the pattern piece, I just left it as a big rectangle. This saved me the hassle of wrestling with it through the machine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UU1VHRSir7I/VTl03t8eGiI/AAAAAAAACJk/oyO6wunk304/s1600/2015-04-21%2B16.09.13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UU1VHRSir7I/VTl03t8eGiI/AAAAAAAACJk/oyO6wunk304/s1600/2015-04-21%2B16.09.13.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gQ359pp7Z90/VTl1LkWqGiI/AAAAAAAACJ0/LBQcdjX6Aws/s1600/2015-04-22%2B11.08.22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gQ359pp7Z90/VTl1LkWqGiI/AAAAAAAACJ0/LBQcdjX6Aws/s1600/2015-04-22%2B11.08.22.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I sewed 1/4-inch from the edge of the cotton (again, a 1/2-inch seam would have been better), and then trimmed away the terry.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2VCH70Z1iso/VTl1WVENOKI/AAAAAAAACJ8/2tsxWllrThM/s1600/2015-04-23%2B11.53.42.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2VCH70Z1iso/VTl1WVENOKI/AAAAAAAACJ8/2tsxWllrThM/s1600/2015-04-23%2B11.53.42.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>

The finished gift: 6 burp cloths and 6 bibs. I used 6 fat quarters, ~1.5 yds of terry, and six size 15 snaps.<br />

I wasn't looking for a crazy new project. Really, I wasn't. But sometimes they just find me. I came across <a href="http://artschooldropout.net/blog/?p=3668" target="_blank">this</a> new pattern today, and I was instantly inspired. I've never done any foundation paper piecing before, so this evening (after watching a short <a href="http://ellisonlane.com/2013/08/beginningpaperpiecing.html" target="_blank">tutorial</a>) I gave it a try.<br />

<br />
My verdict: Mostly fun. Kind of messy (lots of little scraps and threads). Quite a bit of going back and forth between cutting, sewing, and pressing. I've still got some things to learn.<br />
<br />
I was concerned about removing the paper, but it was really easy. The stitching perforates it, and it tears out without any problem. The hard part for me was joining the two sections of the block. My seams didn't quite meet up. I'm sure there is an easy way, so I'll hunt for another tutorial tomorrow.Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176846587235843899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1864169042461836749.post-28262083390281402892015-04-11T22:16:00.000-07:002015-04-11T22:16:45.910-07:00Improvisation<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Last Friday, Freddy and I drove up to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival with my mother. We brought a picnic lunch and spent all of the late morning/early afternoon at RoozenGaarde. The sun came out as we walked out to the fields. There we rows upon rows of red, purple, and yellow tulips; and fields of daffodils, too. I brought home nearly five dozen tulips, which have been cheering up the dining room and living room all week.<br />

<br />
The trip really put me in the mood for spring. So last weekend I updated the linens in the dining room and started working on a quilted wall hanging. The "Tiny Tulip" pattern is one I have from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/QuiltingInTheRain" target="_blank">Quilting in the Rain</a>, and I just used fabrics from my stash. The quilt top took about 5 hours to cut out and piece. Quilting and binding were another 3 or 4. All together a very quick project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OphvmbYYPSE/VRx58jG_LkI/AAAAAAAAB9E/buof00M-jxQ/s1600/2015-03-29%2B16.17.18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OphvmbYYPSE/VRx58jG_LkI/AAAAAAAAB9E/buof00M-jxQ/s1600/2015-03-29%2B16.17.18.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
To hang the quilt, I decided to try out <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/02/hang-a-wall-quilt/" target="_blank">this </a>method from the Craftsy blog. A friend gave me a yardstick and Command hooks, which saved me from a (possibly rainy) walk to the hardware store. If it stays up overnight, I will call the project a success.<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-evrQLHmZTFg/VRNEVlpZtWI/AAAAAAAAB1w/hfWOePARWAY/s1600/2015-02-27%2B09.23.47.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-evrQLHmZTFg/VRNEVlpZtWI/AAAAAAAAB1w/hfWOePARWAY/s1600/2015-02-27%2B09.23.47.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One of my favorite parts of quilting is the gathering of fabric. Sometimes a quilt comes together quickly. I spot a collection or a fat quarter bundle that I love and a quilt idea is born. Other times the fabric comes together slowly, a fabric or two at a time. As as the collection grows, so does the plan for a quilt. This was the case with Freddy's hand-pieced, hexagon quilt. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started collected fabric for this quilt long before Freddy was born. My goal was to create a blanket that didn't scream "boy" or "girl", but rather one that just suggested the sweetness of "childhood." The fabrics that anchor the quilt are Sarah Jane's "Rocket Launch Club" and Riley Blake's "The Simple Life." With them, I placed low volume fabrics with red accents, some blues and gray to anchor it, and a couple yellows for brightness and contrast.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The design for the quilt came about during I time I was a little obsessed with hexagons. The hexagon is a pretty awesome shape. A couple years ago Moda started making hexagonal precuts. Since I was working at the Studio at the time, I made a couple hexagon quilts, one using Moda's precuts and one with hexagons that I cut out myself. (From this I discovered that unless you really enjoy spending hours at the cutting mat, the precuts are worth every penny.) There is one more way to make a hexagon quilt: English paper piecing. It involves sewing fabric to paper hexagons and then whip stitching the pieces together.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nM4CH5Io_kA/VRMjJOu492I/AAAAAAAAB0k/giYvgLXnORg/s1600/P3041068.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nM4CH5Io_kA/VRMjJOu492I/AAAAAAAAB0k/giYvgLXnORg/s1600/P3041068.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The childhood fabrics called for a simple patchwork design and hexagons seemed like the perfect way to make it both simple and fun. I planned the quilt to be crib size (36" x 54"). It would require about two hundred 2-inch hexagons. Designing a quilt is probably about 50% of the fun for me. So with the plan done, this quilt sat in a box for nearly a year.<br />
<br />
Last January I finally had the motivation to get started on it. I had just found out that we were expecting a baby. We kept the news to mostly to ourselves for the first couple months, so working on the quilt was a great outlet for all my excitement. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3CPnX7n3X2s/VRNA-54d0II/AAAAAAAAB1U/n9mhHdszySU/s1600/2014-01-15%2B19.16.47.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3CPnX7n3X2s/VRNA-54d0II/AAAAAAAAB1U/n9mhHdszySU/s1600/2014-01-15%2B19.16.47.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had to put the quilt on hold as we started to look for a house and I focused in on preparing my calculus class for the AP Test. I picked up the quilt again during our summer vacation to the Oregon Coast. But after Freddy was born it just sat in my sewing basket. Until last month, when Freddy discovered it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UxUGXs3eAx0/VRNEVcBcpdI/AAAAAAAAB1s/0cmbfv6gjok/s1600/2015-02-23%2B08.23.48.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UxUGXs3eAx0/VRNEVcBcpdI/AAAAAAAAB1s/0cmbfv6gjok/s1600/2015-02-23%2B08.23.48.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I'm back at work. The goal is to get it completely finished (pieced, quilted, and bound) by Freddy's first birthday in September.</div>

This week I learned that my favorite little quilt shop--the place where I learned to quilt and always found so much inspiration--is closing its storefront and going online. The West Seattle Fabric Company has not only been a part of the community, it has <i>created </i>a community of aspiring and accomplished "sewists". In 2011, I took my very first quilting class there, and a little over a year later I was began teaching quilting there myself.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hearing the news of the closure has led me to reflect quite a bit about the last year and a half. I left the Stitch & Sew Studio to go back to teaching math. Then I left teaching math to stay home and be with my son, Frederick, born last September. Now Frederick ("Freddy") is six months old and I feel like a mother bear must feel when emerging from hibernation. I finally feel like I might be able to pull off this parenthood thing. I'm almost keeping up with laundry and dishes, and we eat homemade meals a few times a week. I can even snatch a few hours for reading and sewing. Life is pretty good. But still I catch myself missing those fun, care free days working in the Studio. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Monica & Greg, the owners of WSFCo, are forever looking on the positive side. So this weekend they are having a "Liquidation Celebration." And when one door closes, another one opens. They will continue selling fabric online and will teach classes, finish quilts, and repair machine out of their new space.</div>

It was just April. This year is going by too fast... While my coworker Jera (<a href="http://quiltingintherain.blogspot.com/">Quilting in the Rain</a>) is busy as a bee working on her book, I've been teaching and quilting up a storm. Here's a sampling of the quilting I've done so far this year...<br />

I grew up watching the 1963 Disney movie, "The Miracle of the White Stallions", the story of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna during World War II. So when we were in Vienna this spring, I just had to go see the famous white horses, the Lippazaner stallions. The Lippazaner are descendants of the horses ridden by the Moors as they rode to conquer Spain in the 7th century. In the 16th century the Habsburgs brought the powerful, agile war horses to Austria and founded the Lippazan breed. To this day, the horses are trained in classical dressage and perform regularly at their home at the Winter Riding School in Vienna. </div>

<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
When we got back from our great European adventure, we watched the Disney movie with my family, pointing out where we sat and explaining what we saw during the performance. This time at the end of the credits I noticed that the movie was based on a book called "My Dancing White Horses" by Alois Podhajsky. I had to get my hands on this book. (With my new super awesome smart phone) I checked Amazon and eBay and found that copies of this out of print book cost a bit more than I'm willing to spend. But the good old library came through. I put a hold on it and another book by Colonel Podhajsky, the director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna from 1939 to 1965. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MMrCrlvxT5g/UfgOTAU8J5I/AAAAAAAAAnk/0mgj_dPsBzM/s1600/2013-07-30+10.54.58.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MMrCrlvxT5g/UfgOTAU8J5I/AAAAAAAAAnk/0mgj_dPsBzM/s320/2013-07-30+10.54.58.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
The other book I'm reading is also an autobiography...<br />
<br />
The trouble with loving to read and love to stitch is that you can't really do both at the same time. Unless, of course you can find someone to read to you. Since neither my husband nor my friends have agreed to be my personal narrator, I'm stuck with getting audio books from the library. (I would say books on tape, but I haven't listened to a book on an actual tale since I was about 8 years old. ) Usually I download audio books from the library, which worked really well with my old mp3 player. Since it's not an I-product, I could listen to the wma books and since it's so old (circa 2005) the security thing doesn't work and I can keep listening long after the book is due. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
But then sometimes, the book I really want to listen to isn't available for download and I have to check out the cds. Which isn't as convenient, but is so incredibly worth it, especially when what you're listening to is David Attenborough's autobiography, "Life on Air".</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TwTy-iHj-d0/UfgL-PVRVKI/AAAAAAAAAm0/RYFOd1VRHYI/s1600/2013-07-30+10.52.13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TwTy-iHj-d0/UfgL-PVRVKI/AAAAAAAAAm0/RYFOd1VRHYI/s320/2013-07-30+10.52.13.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Jason and I are huge Attenborough fans. We recently watched his latest big series "Africa" and, like always, were completely blown away by the animals, the scenery, and the amazingly talented photographers. "Life on Air", even without the visuals, is just as fun and full of crazy adventures and wacky animals stories. And, thanks to the fact that I have to get up and put in a new CD every 74 minutes, I'm going through it a lot more slowly than the downloaded audiobooks.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been rather busy since starting at the Stitch & Sew Studio. It's been so much getting to know the studio members and the ladies who come for Sip & Sew and demo nights. There is nothing like being around creative, inspiring people every day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The only down side, if there is a down side, to working at the studio is not having as much time or energy to work on projects at home. But sometimes inspiration is overwhelming and you just have to sew. Here's what I did on my day off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ISxAlc7fMqw/ULTv1V3wS-I/AAAAAAAAAcI/Of84zsxoPmM/s1600/PB270766.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ISxAlc7fMqw/ULTv1V3wS-I/AAAAAAAAAcI/Of84zsxoPmM/s400/PB270766.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had a box at the studio of some of the actual items photographed in Fabric-by-Fabric One-Yard Wonders. I especially loved the bags. The Monster Backpack is absolutely adorable. The Retro Bag is on my list of things to make. But it was the Charming Bag that I decided I needed to have right now. I used quilting cotton, reinforced by a sturdy fusible interfacing, both from West Seattle Fabric Co. The fun button is from Seattle Yarn.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today was the first day of open sewing at the West Seattle Stitch & Sew Studio. There was one member there sewing while I was learning the basic operations this morning. After countless hours of sewing alone at my dining room table, words cannot express how incredible it is to be part of a creative, stitching community. The studio is a beautiful, stress-free, craft home away from home. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today I finally started working on the pink 'Baby' dress. (Halloween is just a couple weeks away.) We decided to use the pattern that came with 'The Couture Dress' class (Vogue 8648).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n7QcAeoolw8/UHzUkeAo-KI/AAAAAAAAAYM/r2p8cDr6jL4/s1600/PA150116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n7QcAeoolw8/UHzUkeAo-KI/AAAAAAAAAYM/r2p8cDr6jL4/s400/PA150116.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There are lots of pieces and many of them are cut on the bias; but it went together smoothly--maybe because I've spent hours watching Susan Khalje working on in the Craftsy videos. I basted the top together so that I can do a fitting before adding the lining. And I added pockets, because all dresses should have pockets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It's so pink!<br />

<br />
I love to start new projects much more than I love to finish old ones. What eventually happens is I get bogged down in too many ambitious, long-term projects. (Embroidering state flowers, making Dresden plates, sewing dresses...) I feel like I'm barely treading water, working hard but with little finished product to show for it. That why it's so great to find quick, finish in less than a day projects that give a rush of creative energy. The journal I made last Friday was just that. It went together in just a couple hours (while watching TV) and I'm really happy with the result. I followed this tutorial that I discovered on Pinterest: <a href="http://jamesdarrow.deviantart.com/art/Bookbinding-Tutorial-292237490">http://jamesdarrow.deviantart.com/art/Bookbinding-Tutorial-292237490</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fgP9egf-bpw/UHSPYoWrprI/AAAAAAAAAXI/5uVkRxVnNhY/s1600/PA050780.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fgP9egf-bpw/UHSPYoWrprI/AAAAAAAAAXI/5uVkRxVnNhY/s400/PA050780.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I used 60lb drawing paper. The sheets were 9x12-in. and I folded them in half to make a 9x6-in. book. I found a couple sheets of vintage-y scrap paper, a sheet of "artist craft paper" (I couldn't find chipboard), embroidery floss, and some fun fall fabric from West Seattle Fabric Co.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-48YB4UpLvLA/UHSSYZPsrtI/AAAAAAAAAXk/S5i_nZqFYaM/s1600/PA070052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-48YB4UpLvLA/UHSSYZPsrtI/AAAAAAAAAXk/S5i_nZqFYaM/s400/PA070052.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The tutorial claims that sewing the signatures together is the most difficult part. But I found that the hardest part was waiting for the glue to dry so that I could enjoy my book.<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6aSUqeaKN3E/UGtyA27IGGI/AAAAAAAAAV0/DMIC0ROP_ZA/s1600/PA010732.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6aSUqeaKN3E/UGtyA27IGGI/AAAAAAAAAV0/DMIC0ROP_ZA/s400/PA010732.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yesterday I mustered up the strength to tear apart the muslin and start working on the gray dress again. After all the work put into sewing the muslin and making it fit, it was bittersweet having to rip it apart. But sometimes to move two steps forward, we have to take one step back.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oayrdvkto04/UGtvcpNQhzI/AAAAAAAAAUk/c3J3oTwS6ts/s1600/PA010731.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oayrdvkto04/UGtvcpNQhzI/AAAAAAAAAUk/c3J3oTwS6ts/s400/PA010731.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm using a light cotton as my underlining. It's more structured but also much lighter than the gray suiting, so I think it will work out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KLM3WmFslWA/UGtvmdG51wI/AAAAAAAAAUs/YcfeSTQQmFU/s1600/PA010734.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KLM3WmFslWA/UGtvmdG51wI/AAAAAAAAAUs/YcfeSTQQmFU/s400/PA010734.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Transferring seam lines again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8-HO2NLIrDk/UGtvxQeRNgI/AAAAAAAAAU4/yNqX849CcrU/s1600/PA010737.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8-HO2NLIrDk/UGtvxQeRNgI/AAAAAAAAAU4/yNqX849CcrU/s400/PA010737.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then onto the gray. I gave it a good steaming and laid it out on the living room floor. (After sweeping, of course.) I carefully measured the distance between the grain lines and selvages, making sure they were parallel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9wqU97QxPoc/UGtvUlq6N7I/AAAAAAAAAUc/NTV39Tz1RaY/s1600/PA020745.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9wqU97QxPoc/UGtvUlq6N7I/AAAAAAAAAUc/NTV39Tz1RaY/s400/PA020745.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally cutting out the gray suiting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KTVvs5yD7K0/UGtvBZ0nzUI/AAAAAAAAAUU/UHzVsIKiwxM/s1600/PA020749.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KTVvs5yD7K0/UGtvBZ0nzUI/AAAAAAAAAUU/UHzVsIKiwxM/s400/PA020749.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The next task is basting. I'm hand basting the underlining to the gray along the seam lines using a yellow silk thread. (The somewhat slippery silk thread will be easier to remove later.) This combines the two fabrics into a hybrid fabric, while also transferring the seam line marks to the other side and allowing for tactile matching of seams.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0i6Cik0MN8I/UGtwJtA84eI/AAAAAAAAAVA/lMdNq6Kv7i4/s1600/PA020760.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0i6Cik0MN8I/UGtwJtA84eI/AAAAAAAAAVA/lMdNq6Kv7i4/s400/PA020760.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
After this is done, I will hand baste the entire dress together. All of this may sound like tedious work, but as a crocheter/knitter/embroiderer, I actually find the hand sewing very relaxing. (Quite frankly, sewing machines stress me out.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rP_MPb4vXek/UGtwuCigs-I/AAAAAAAAAVQ/bQzH9KHb_VM/s1600/PA020778.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rP_MPb4vXek/UGtwuCigs-I/AAAAAAAAAVQ/bQzH9KHb_VM/s400/PA020778.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />

<br />
Fall Crafternoon took place in our rather small apartment Sunday afternoon. But instead of cleaning Saturday night, I decided to make a skirt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eQqsLYn8CBg/UGTrlwqvF-I/AAAAAAAAAS0/j4lAyS1bmMA/s1600/P9270705.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eQqsLYn8CBg/UGTrlwqvF-I/AAAAAAAAAS0/j4lAyS1bmMA/s400/P9270705.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I got it finished around 11 p.m. But I also put the hook and eye in backwards. :-/<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9pGQFBrB6f8/UGTrtFmkO8I/AAAAAAAAATE/sVqL7PfuFE8/s1600/P9270711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9pGQFBrB6f8/UGTrtFmkO8I/AAAAAAAAATE/sVqL7PfuFE8/s400/P9270711.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did manage to get the apartment clean for Sunday, and Crafternoon was crowded, but lots of fun. One of these days I'll remember to take pictures during it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
..........</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This morning I finally tried out the fork pins I learned about from the couture dress class.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fork pins keep layers of fabric from slipping, which is handy when matching seams. This is a quilt for the church sewing circle. I think the pins are working pretty well so far...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
..........</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This afternoon I finally finished the muslin for my Sherlock Dress. It's a complete redo from my first attempt. I made the top and sleeves a size bigger, changed the pleats on the skirt, and made the pockets bigger. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mZWbt23K1wc/UGTrO9SUgxI/AAAAAAAAASg/qHDWdxKtiYs/s1600/P9270712.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mZWbt23K1wc/UGTrO9SUgxI/AAAAAAAAASg/qHDWdxKtiYs/s400/P9270712.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Next I have to rip it apart and start on the fashion fabric.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
............</div>
<br />
<br />
In other news, the West Seattle Fabric Company is opening a second location next month. The Stitch & Sew Studio will be on California Ave, a couple miles south of the fabric store. And I will be working there during the morning open sew hours Tuesday through Friday. I look forward to seeing you there!<br />
<br />

And by the way, the West Seattle Fabric Co. is having a great blowout sale this weekend. You should check that out, too. :-)<br />

<br />
This weekend I took a break from working on my dress. Instead I put together a quilted table runner, using a charm pack and some striped fabric that I picked up at <a href="http://www.westseattlefabriccompany.com/">The West Seattle Fabric Company</a> a few weeks ago.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://shop.westseattlefabriccompany.com/collections/new-pre-cuts-and-bundles/products/marmalade-charm-pack"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NKfRd49goF8/UFd1PgXcRUI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/QPS9ni8zW1Y/s200/marmalade_charm_pack_grande.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
The inspiration was Stefanie Roman's <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/10/charming-stars-quilt.html">Charming Stars Quilt</a> and the many primary colored quilts I've seen recently.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BW-h3Sf3ano/UFd2WfRChmI/AAAAAAAAAQY/QZ3KIg8mNjw/s1600/P9140586.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BW-h3Sf3ano/UFd2WfRChmI/AAAAAAAAAQY/QZ3KIg8mNjw/s400/P9140586.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I didn't have quite enough of the stripe fabric for the backing, so I improvised with the remaining charm squares.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
'Marmalade' didn't have enough blue for the pattern, so I threw in a couple squares that were leftover from my <a href="http://fannyluwho.blogspot.com/2011/08/first-quilting-project-finishing.html">'Ruby' table runner</a>.<br />
